Answers to 5 of the most common questions we are asked at the consultation

Planning a new kitchen, bathroom or bedroom is exciting, but it’s completely normal to have questions before making such an important investment. In fact, many of the people who visit our Southampton showroom ask the same practical questions about installation, quotations, deliveries and what happens once work begins.

After more than 55 years of designing and installing kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms across Southampton and Hampshire, we’ve learned that honest answers and clear advice help people make confident decisions. Here are five of the questions we are often asked during a design consultation—and exactly how we answer them.

Kitchens Southampton

Can you provide a fully itemised quotation?

Yes. We are consumers too, and believe a quotation should be clear, transparent and easy to understand.

Our quotations are fully itemised, with costs broken down into separate sections for Furniture & Worktops, Appliances, and Installation, so you can see exactly what’s included in your project.

Why does that matter?

A new kitchen is a significant investment, and, we believe, understanding the quotation is much easier when everything is clearly laid out rather than rolled into a single figure.

By itemising each section, you can see how your budget is allocated across the different elements of your kitchen, making it easier to make informed decisions without losing sight of the overall design.

Designed around your priorities

Because every kitchen we create is bespoke, your quotation reflects your individual project rather than an off-the-shelf package.  We can discuss the options and explain how each decision affects the overall project.

No hidden surprises

When we present our ideas to you we will talk you through the quotation, answer any questions, and make sure you are comfortable with what’s included before work begins.

After more than 55 years designing and installing kitchens across Southampton and Hampshire, we believe that clear pricing, honest advice and quality craftsmanship are just as important as creating a beautiful finished kitchen.

Are the fitters and specialist trades directly employed by you, or are they sub-contractors you hire?

It’s a question we’re asked almost every day, and it’s an important one.

When you’re investing in a new kitchen, bathroom or bedroom, you’re not just choosing the design. You’re choosing the people who’ll be working in your home for days or sometimes weeks, so it’s perfectly reasonable to want to know who’s actually carrying out the installation.

Our fitters are directly employed by Solent Kitchen Design

Unlike many kitchen companies, our kitchen fitters are employed by us.

Some have been part of our team for over 36 years, while others have been with us for more than 20 years. They’re not a revolving team of subcontractors—we know them personally, we trust their workmanship, and they’re part of the business our customers have been recommending for over 55 years.

That consistency makes a real difference. Our fitters work closely with our designers from the beginning of the project, so they understand the plans, spot potential issues early, and take pride in delivering the finished result we’ve all agreed together.

What about plumbers and electricians?

We work with a trusted network of experienced plumbers, electricians and other specialist tradespeople we’ve built relationships with over many years.

They’re carefully chosen for the quality of their work and reliability, and they’re coordinated as part of our fully project-managed installation service.

Because our designers consider plumbing, electrics and structural requirements from the early design stages, everyone involved is working to the same plan, helping the project run as smoothly as possible.

Why does this matter?

When different trades are organised separately, communication can become difficult and small delays can quickly turn into bigger ones.

With a project-managed installation, you have one experienced team coordinating the whole process—from design through to completion—so you always know who to contact if you have a question.

For many of our customers across Southampton and Hampshire, that’s one of the biggest advantages of choosing an independent family-run kitchen company rather than managing multiple trades themselves.

The reassurance customers are looking for

We know inviting people into your home is a big decision.

That’s why we believe it’s important to be transparent about who’ll be carrying out the work, how the installation is managed, and who’s responsible from start to finish.

It’s one of the reasons so much of our work comes through recommendations and returning customers who’ve experienced that consistency for themselves.

Do you handle the entire schedule of works?

Yes. We manage the entire schedule of works from start to finish, coordinating everything from plastering and flooring to electrical work and Gas Safe certification, so you don’t have to organise multiple trades yourself.

When you choose Solent Kitchen Design for your kitchen, bathroom or bedroom installation in Southampton, you’re choosing a fully project-managed service that pairs premium-quality British-made furniture with an installation completed to the same high standard.

A beautifully designed kitchen is only as good as the installation behind it. That’s why careful planning, skilled craftsmanship and attention to detail are just as important to us as the furniture itself.

A carefully coordinated installation

From the moment your installation begins, we coordinate the sequence of work so each trade arrives when they’re needed. Our employed fitters work alongside trusted specialist tradespeople we’ve built relationships with over many years, helping ensure every stage is completed with the same level of care and precision.

Because these practical details are considered during the design stage, appliance connections, flooring levels, lighting layouts and structural requirements are planned before installation begins, rather than being left to solve on site.

What’s included?

Every project is different, but where required we can coordinate:

  • Installation by our employed fitting team

  • Plumbing and electrical work

  • Gas Safe registered engineers and certification

  • Plastering

  • Flooring installation

  • Decorating where included within the project

  • Final finishing touches and quality checks

One experienced team from start to finish

One of the biggest advantages of a project-managed installation is that you have one experienced team overseeing the entire process. Instead of juggling different contractors and schedules, you have a single point of contact from the initial design through to completion.

After more than 55 years designing and installing kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms across Southampton and Hampshire, we’ve found that the best results come from combining thoughtful design, premium-quality materials, experienced installation and careful project management. It’s that combination that helps create spaces that not only look beautiful on day one, but continue to perform well for years to come.

How do you handle unexpected structual issues once the old kitchen is ripped out?

The honest answer is that any property can reveal surprises once the old kitchen comes out. The difference is having an experienced team who knows how to deal with them calmly, safely and with minimal disruption.

With over 55 years of designing and installing kitchens across Southampton and Hampshire, we’ve encountered everything from uneven walls and rotten floors to outdated electrics, plumbing that doesn’t match modern layouts, and hidden issues behind cupboards.

We look ahead before installation

During the design stage, we assess your space as thoroughly as possible.   Our experience goes beyond kitchen design. David has over 30 years of experience designing and project managing kitchen installations, and his background in Quantity Surveying provides valuable knowledge of buildings and structural considerations when planning a project.

If we uncover something unexpected…

If an issue is discovered during installation, we don’t simply work around it and hope for the best.

Instead, we’ll:

  • Explain exactly what’s been found in plain English.
  • Discuss the safest and most appropriate solution.
  • Let you know if there will be an additional cost, sourcing formal quotations if necessary.
  • Coordinate any specialist trades required.
  • Keep you informed about how it affects the schedule before proceeding.

Quality before shortcuts

Whether it is replacing a rotton floor before fitting premium British-made furniture, addressing electrical work to current standards, or resolving a hidden plumbing issue, our priority is getting the installation right rather than taking shortcuts that could compromise the finished result.

A well-installed kitchen depends on what’s behind the furniture just as much as what you see when it’s finished.

Is your furniture delivered to my house fully rigid or flat-packed?

Fully rigid. Our rigid kitchen units are factory-built using glued dowel construction, not flat-packed, giving you the strength, precision and durability you’d expect from premium British-made furniture.

Delivered when they’re needed – not weeks before

We also do things a little differently when it comes to delivery.

Instead of having your new kitchen delivered to your home days or weeks before installation, your furniture is delivered to our Southampton showroom first. We check everything before it’s needed and arrange for it to arrive at your home on the day your installation begins.

That means you don’t have to clear your garage, dining room or spare room to store kitchen units and packaging before work starts.

Why do rigid kitchen units matter?

Factory-built rigid units offer several advantages over flat-pack kitchen units:

  • Greater strength and stability thanks to glued dowel construction.

  • More accurate alignment during installation.

  • Less time spent assembling units on site.

  • A premium finish from the moment they’re fitted.

Combined with our experienced installation team and carefully managed delivery process, it’s one of the ways we help make your new kitchen installation feel more organised, less disruptive and built to last for years to come.
